WHAT'S NEW!!

The first 25 people to submit their registrations and $75.00 deposits before the Friday, June 24th deadline will be eligible to participate in a drawing to win either one copy of Sibelius Instruments or one copy of Photoshop Elements! The drawing will take place on the first evening of the Institute. You must be present to win.

Housing will be in the NEW Castleton State College AIR CONDITIONED dormitories.

Course number for all courses: Education (EDU 6710 C12) cross listed with Music (MUS 6710 C01) for anyone taking Music Composition or an Independent Study with a focus on music curriculum or projects.

Removing the Mystery of Photoshop --The Basics

Suited for beginning Photoshop users. Learn how to create a Photoshop image using a digital camera and scanner; learn how to use these images in classroom applications, to post files to the ARTT site and to create Powerpoint presentations. Using Photoshop Elements and a digital camera, find out what you can (and can't) do with digital imaging tools for enhancement, cropping, resizing, layers and more.

Instructors:

Lian Brehm has a BFA from NY State College of Ceramics at Alfred, and a MFA in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design. Lian is an art educator at Danville, Walden, and Peacham Schools and has been an ARTT participant since 1998. Lian recently returned from 3 weeks in Japan as a guest of the Japanese government, as a recipient of the Japan Fulbright Teacher Travel program. She had her first Vermont one-person exhibition at Catamount Arts in June.

Lowell Klock is a photographer and digital artist from Wallingford. She is in her fifth year of mentoring with ARTT. She also has taught beginning photography at targeted schools through the Middlebury and Manchester Frog Hollow Craft Centers, and has taught Beginning Photoshop at the Chaffee Gallery in Rutland as well as several Summer Institute courses with Lian Brehm. She has been a co-presenter at the Spring and Fall 2001 Vermont Alliance for Arts Education conferences. Her works were displayed as featured artist in October 2003 at the Manchester Frog Hollow Craft Center.

Composing and Arranging Music:
Addressing Literacy, Creativity, and Productivity for Students and Teachers

Level 1 - for beginners and novices

Level 2 - for intermediate and advanced

This course will provide teachers with tools for composing, creating arrangements and designing worksheets for classroom use. Strategies for use of notation software with general music classrooms, instrumental and vocal ensembles and theory/composition courses will be explored. The composition process used by the Vermont MIDI Project focusing on reflection, critique and strengthening literacy skills will be woven through the course.

Instructor:

Anne Hamilton teaches choral music and MIDI Composition/Music Theory at North Country Union High School. She has experience teaching general and choral music at the elementary and middle school levels, and is a founding member of the Vermont MIDI Project. Anne has conducted music technology workshops and presented the work of the MIDI Project at regional and national conferences throughout the United States.

General Course Information

All courses will be held on the Castleton State College campus in Castleton, VT. The course number for all courses is Education (EDU 6710 C12). However, this is also cross listed with Music (MUS 6710 C01) for anyone taking Music Composition or an Independent Study with a focus on music curriculum or projects. Housing will be in the college dormitories and meals are also provided at Castleton State College. The total cost for the institute, including room and board, is $659 without CSC credit, and $1059 with 3 CSC credits for VT residents or Vermont teachers. A $35 lab fee will be due from those taking any course except "Independent Study". It is expected that these students will provide their own equipment. Students enrolled in any other class will be using state-of-the-art computer labs at Castleton State College. Any non-Vermont resident or non-Vermont teacher will be charged an additional fee for the CSC credit option. Sandi MacLeod, the Instructor of Record, will provide additional information if needed.

Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships are available for teachers and artists who wish to take the Arts and Technology Summer Institute, but do not have school district support for the full fee. Scholarship amounts up to $500 will be determined based on need. Individual need must be articulated in a one page letter submitted to the Board of Directors by e-mail or to Vermont MIDI/ARTT Project Inc., 30 Steeplebush Rd. Essex Junction, VT 05452. These scholarships are supported by a grant from the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts and will be distributed until the funds are exhausted. Instructor of Record:

Sandi MacLeod has coordinated the Vermont MIDI Project for the past nine years and participated actively in all phases of the project as a classroom teacher, workshop leader, and course instructor. Her presentations have taken her around the country demonstrating online arts mentoring andmusic composition with technology. Sandi is a faculty member in the Education Department at the University of Vermont where she teaches courses in educational technology.
