Opus 14 live performance on Tuesday, November 28th, 2006
featuring Vermont MIDI Project student compositions played by a professional brass quintet and pianist. All scores must be posted on the password protected website by students from project schools or Independent Study students with participation fees paid for the 2006-2007 school year.
Schedule for November 28th:
- Concert - 6:30 pm at Elley-Long Music
Center
at Saint Michael's College
- Rehearsals and workshops in the afternoon
- Concert and rehearsals open to the public
General Deadline Information:
- October 6th - The first posting must be submitted by Friday October 6th by midnight.
- November 3rd - Revisions should be complete by Friday, November 3rd by midnight when the composer mentors and the project coordinator begin deliberating.
- November 7th - The selections for performance at the Opus 14 concert will be announced on
November 7th by noon on the password protected website. Later in the week it will also be published on the public website.
- November 14th - All complete scores must be posted on the password protected website by November 14th.
The file names must use the word "final" in the title. Mentors will assist with score preparation from November 7th through November 14th. Note: You do not need to mail scores and parts. However, you do need to bring 4 copies of the concert score to the Opus rehearsal.
Criteria for Compositions:
Event: Opus 14 live performance on Tuesday, November 28th, featuring Vermont MIDI Project student compositions played by professional musicians.
1. Instruments are in the appropriate range
2. Careful score preparation
- accurate notation of pitch and rhythm, if a traditional style work
- clear score directions if a contemporary style work in non-traditional notation
- evidence of dynamics, articulation and expression markings to indicate composer's intent
3. Any combination of instruments from the ensembles is allowed or a solo.

Instruments are trumpet I, trumpet II, French horn, trombone, tuba and piano. Be sure to check with the project coordinator if you have questions about instrumentation.
4. The piece clearly demonstrates evidence of some of the following compositional elements: repetition and contrast, unity and variety, tension and release, balance.
Overall criteria for selection:
- Indicate the piece is being submitted for consideration by selecting the Opus 14 filter tab when submitting the composition to the password protected site. (If you forget, use the edit button and revise the discussion title.)
- Adhere to the posted deadlines.

Complete the request-respond-reply/revise cycle at least once.
5. Students must be able to attend both the rehearsal and performance of their work on Tuesday, November 28th at Elley-Long Music Center at St. Michael's College in Colchester, VT.
NOTE:
Work previously submitted may be considered if adjustments are made for instruments available and composition title is renamed on the password site to indicate Opus 14.
