COURSES and INSTRUCTORS:
Course number for all courses: Education
(EDU 6710 C06) cross listed with Music (MUS 5710
C01) for anyone taking Music Composition or Independent
Projects with a focus on music curriculum who wishes to receive
specific music credits.

Composing
and Arranging Music with Sibelius:
Addressing Literacy, Creativity, and Productivity
for Students and Teachers
Level 1- Beginner/Novice
Entry level course for those who have not used technology extensively,
or who need a refresher in Sibelius notation software. Basic instruction
will be combined with project-based exploration, with great flexibility
based on individual needs. Break-out sessions will include teaching
strategies for different grade levels, creating worksheets, assessment,
writing for live instruments and combining video and music. The
composition process used by the Vermont MIDI Project focusing
on reflection, critique and strengthening music literacy skills
will be woven throughout the course.
Level 2 - for
intermediate and advanced
This course will expand off the fundamental Sibelius skills learned
previously in the Beginner/Novice class. The course will focus
on individually designed composition or arranging projects based
on individual needs. Participants will have the opportunity to
explore intermediate and advanced aspects of the notation software,
including chord symbols, lyrics, filters, multiple voices, plug-ins,
and more. This course will also cover and clarify some of the
new features of Sibelius 4, including dynamic parts, the use and
creation of classroom worksheets, and inputting video for film
scoring.
Instructor for Beginning/Novice:
Anne K. Hamilton has
been teaching workshops and courses in music technology for
ten years. After teaching music at the elementary and middle
school levels for fifteen years, she is now in her seventh year
teaching Chorus and Music Theory/MIDI Composition at North Country
Union High School. She has presented the work of the Vermont
MIDI Project at conferences throughout the United States. Anne
received special recognition in 2005 as a nominee for the Music
Technology Teacher of the Year by TI:ME (Technology Institute
for Music for Music Educators).
Instructor for Intermediate/Advanced:
Matt Podd is a
composer and pianist currently studying at the Ithaca College
School of Music. As a keyboardist, Matt performs regularly as
a jazz pianist, vocal accompanist, and church organist. Matt
composes and plays various types of music, including jazz, classical,
contemporary, theatre, and popular. His compositions have been
performed in England, Spain, Canada, and throughout the United
States. As a student member of the Vermont MIDI Project, Matts
work was featured in many Opus concerts and in the new DVD Young
Composer Series: Writing for Brass Instruments. Matt currently
serves as a composer mentor in the Vermont MIDI Project.

MovieMaking
Basics:
Using Moving Images to Convey Information
This course is suited for beginning MovieMaker and iMovie users.
Participants will develop an individual project either by capturing
video footage or bring already collected footage to produce a final
project during the institute. You will learn how to plan a movie
project, import and edit footage, use transitions, edit titles,
add music and sound, include images, and pull a piece together that
communicates your topic. A special focus session will be available
about using the new Sibelius notation software feature that allows
you to sync your score to your movie. This course will examine usage
of both MovieMaker and iMovie - free entry level programs that are
included with current computers.
Instructor:
Laurie Gelles has
a M.A. in Instructional Technologies and Design from San Francisco
State University, and a B.S. of Education from the University
of Vermont. Laurie is currently the Educational Technology Coordinator
within the College of Education and Social Services at the University
of Vermont. She also taught Media and Technology for 3 years
at Mill Valley Middle School in Mill Valley, California. Laurie
specializes in technology integration, and enjoys working with
rich multimedia applications.
Independent Projects:
Have a project in mind that supports your personal professional
development goals? If you have a general plan and now just need
TIME and/or COLLEGE CREDIT to fulfill that goal then sign up for
the Music and Multimedia Summer Institute Independent Projects course.
You'll have access to other instructors, a curriculum and assessment
consultant, and music and multimedia technology specialists for
assistance. There willl also be opportunities to participate in
special focus sessions and network with other institute participants.

need to be outlined and approved by Sandi prior to the opening of
the institute.
Music and Technology Specialist:
Peggy Madden assembled
her first computer based project studio in 1988, secured commercial
work scoring music for videos, released a CD of original music
in 1996, and subsequently developed an interest in electro-acoustic
music through her affiliation with Dartmouth College. She currently
works as a music technology consultant at Hartford High School
in White River Junction, Vermont where she played an instrumental
role in the development of a state-of the-art music lab. She has
also had numerous artist residencies in various Vermont schools.
Peggy has been an online composer mentor with the Vermont MIDI
Project for the past nine years.

Special Topics Sessions
Participants will be able to select
from special topic sessions they wish to attend in addition to the
main course they have selected for the focus of their week. Sessions
offered throughout the week will include:
· Sibelius
4 and syncing your score to video
· Strategies for integrating music composition into the curriculum
for grades 2-8
· Strategies for integrating music composition into the curriculum
for grades 6-12
· Switcheroo - an introduction to the software being used
in other courses
· Freeware or shareware programs for audio manipulation and
editing
· Introduction to Garage Band
· Thursday night unwind and relax jam session
General Course Information
All courses will be held on the Castleton
State College campus in Castleton, VT. The course number for
all courses is Education (EDU 6710 C06). However,
this is also cross listed with Music (MUS 5710 C01)
for anyone taking Music Composition or Independent Projects with
a focus on music curriculum who wishes to receive specific music
credits. Housing will be in Castleton Hall, the new air conditioned
dormitory and meals are also provided at Castleton State College.
Rooms with double occupancy and meals are included in the institute
cost, but an additional $75.00 will be charged to those who desire
a private room.The total cost for the institute, including room
and board, is $669 without CSC credit, and $1069 with 3 CSC credits.
A $35 lab fee will be due from those taking any course except
"Independent Projects". It is expected that these students
will provide their own equipment. Students enrolled in any other
class will be using state-of-the-art computer labs at Castleton
State College. Sandi
MacLeod, the Instructor of Record, will provide additional
information if needed.

Instructor of Record:
Sandi MacLeod Ed.D. has
coordinated the Vermont MIDI Project for the past ten years and
participated actively in all phases of the project as a classroom
teacher, workshop leader, and course instructor. Her presentations
have taken her around the country demonstrating online arts mentoring
andmusic composition with technology. Sandi is a faculty member
in the Education Department at the University of Vermont where
she teaches courses in educational technology and integrating
the visual and performing arts.
