Music and Multimedia Technology
Summer Institute 2011

We’re moving the institute to Champlain College in Burlington where they’re known for their advanced technology facilities and lovely campus nestled in the hill overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains - all within walking distance to restaurants, shops, and entertainment in downtown Burlington.
Tour the campus, download a map. We’re excited to partner with Champlain College’s Conferences and Events team, noted for their location, facilities and service to national and international events.
Classes will be held three computer labs, two in Foster Hall and one in Wick Hall. The Independent Study group and institute “office” will be in Wick Hall. For those staying on campus, we’ll be in Rowell Hall, available as single or double occupancy rooms. Lunch will be served daily to all in the Student Life Complex offering freshly made dishes from various Chef’s Stations. Tuesday arrival will feature a welcome continental breakfast at the registration area. For those staying on campus, Breakfast on Wednesday through Friday and dinner on Tuesday and Wednesday will also be included. Dinner Thursday is on your own with a chance to explore downtown Burlington, a short walk from campus. We’re planning a jam session at a local establishment. More TBA!

Audio Essentials for the Modern Music Educator
Instructors: Adam and Matt Podd
Today's educators are faced with a generation of tech-savvy learners. The music classroom is no exception, and engaging these students means speaking their language. This course will help you integrate new technology while maintaining your teaching philosophy and artistic integrity. You will learn to assess performance, teach musical concepts, and even explore composition using the fundamentals of digital audio and a variety of software. Instructors will model 21st century lessons plans and guide you in developing your own. Instructors will model 21st century project-based lesson plans and guide you in developing your own.
Instructors:
Adam Podd holds a Bachelor of Music from The Hartt School in Hartford, CT, where he studied music production technology, piano, and tuba. Adam has recorded and produced several albums including singer-songwriters, choral ensembles, and jazz combos. He also works as an assistant engineer at New York Noise, a commercial music house in Manhattan.
Matt Podd holds degrees in jazz studies and music composition from the Eastman School of Music and Ithaca College. An award-winning composer, Matt's works for jazz ensemble have been widely performed throughout the United States, including a prominent feature at the International Rochester Jazz Festival. Matt has served actively as a long-time composition mentor for the VT MIDI Project.
The Podd Brothers are both freelance pianists, composers, and educators living in New York City. Their diverse careers have allowed them to join forces on many musical and multi-media projects. Whether on the stage or in the classroom the Podd brothers enjoy the opportunity to work collaboratively.

CANCELLED - FLIP: Video for Students and Teacher
Instructor: Carrie Kohl
Inexpensive, simple to use, video cameras that fit into your pocket have expanded the use of video from citizen journalism to student's classrooms. Although the FLIP video camera's simple 4 button design has made capturing video a simple, no fuss process, the possibilities for producing or publishing the videos are endless. This session will give you a chance to work with the Flipshare software and Windows Movie Maker. We will also experiment with making your own movie soundtrack using the MYNA program on AVIARY. Join a network of educators who are discovering the power of video in education. FLIP camera required for this course and included in the registration fee.
Instructor:
A Vermont native, Carrie Kohl, is a musician, a music educator, and a high school Technology Literacy instructor. Carrie’s students use the FLIP cameras in multiple activities including interviews with peers and adults to document influences in their lives. Students produced a movie using Windows Movie Maker. Students also use MYNA (from www.aviary.com) to create soundtracks for their FLIP movies. Carrie has worked with Lucie deLaBruere, Sandi MacLeod, and Jon Gallo on various technology projects. She has attended the VT Tech Fest and is taking her Level 1 Smart Board training this summer.
Carrie earned a B.A. in music education from Castleton State College in 2004 and currently is the director of Bands at Bethel Elementary School and Whitcomb Jr. – Sr. High School. She lives in Pittsfield, VT with her husband and 4 year old son. She has performed with the Vermont Jazz Ensemble, Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra, and the South Royalton Town Band. Carrie also serves on the Vermont Music Educators Association Board of Directors as the Conference Chair.

Composition for the Music
Classroom
Instructor: Anne K. Hamilton
This course is designed for music educators who wish to develop or expand a music composition program in their school. Basic instruction and advanced features will be combined with project-based exploration, with great flexibility based on individual needs. Topics throughout the week will include teaching strategies for different grade levels, creating worksheets, assessment, writing for live instruments, arranging for school ensembles and scanning music. The composition process used by the Vermont MIDI Project focusing on reflection, critique and strengthening music literacy skills will be woven throughout the course. Students will create lesson plans and materials that they can use in their particular teaching situation This course will use Sibelius and/or Noteflight Crescendo as software.

Anne K. Hamilton has been teaching workshops and courses in music technology for thirteen years. After teaching music at the elementary and middle school level, she is now in her twelfth year teaching Chorus and Music Theory and Composition at North Country Union High School. She has presented the work of the Vermont MIDI Project at conferences throughout the United States. Anne received special recognition in 2005 as a nominee for the Music Technology Teacher of the Year by TI:ME (Technology Institute for Music for Music Educators) and was named Vermont Music Educator of the Year for 2009.

Projects:
Have a project in mind that supports your personal
professional development goals? If you have a general plan and now just
need TIME and/or COLLEGE CREDIT to fulfill that goal then sign up for
the Music and Multimedia Summer Institute Independent Projects course.
You'll have access to other instructors, a curriculum and assessment
consultant, and music and multimedia technology specialists for
assistance. There will also be opportunities to participate in special
focus sessions and network with other institute participants. Contact sandi@vtmidi.org to consider the
options that might support your need. Independent Projects need to be
outlined and approved by Sandi prior to the opening of the institute.
Summer Institute EXTRA: Music Theory Brush-Up for Composing
Instructor: Matt Podd
Monday 1-4 pm – new offering as requested by music educators
$30 additional for Summer Institute attendees, $75 for anyone not registered for the Summer Institute
This review session will uncover how music theory fundamentals can help guide the composing and arranging process. We will review topics of harmony, voice-leading, phrase structures, and more. For composers, music theory should serve to support the creative process, not restrict it. This session will help you find that balance while revisiting college-level theory concepts. Parallel 5ths welcome.

Fees and General Course Information
The Institute price of $909 without graduate credits, or $1359 with three graduate credits, includes a double occupancy room and all meals while attending the institute. Mealtime is an opportunity to network with colleagues who are attending the sessions who come from distant school districts and states beyond Vermont. Our sessions run from 8:30 am through to 4:00 pm every day.
Registration deposit of $75 or school PO# received by June 1st entitles you to a Zoom H1 digital recorder OR Korg MicroKEY controller.
Those who prefer to return home in the evening or find other accommodations will have $109 deducted from the total cost of the institute.
General Course Information:
All courses will be held on the Champlain College campus in Burlington, Vermont. The course number for all courses is Education (EDU 6710 C49) or cross-listed with Music (MUS 5710 C01) for anyone taking Music Composition, Digital Audio or an Independent Project with a focus on music curriculum who wishes to receive specific music credits. Participants who choose the 3 credit option are required to continue uploading work on a project and critiquing the work of others on the password protected website for an additional 10 hours in the two weeks following the institute. Housing will be on the Champlain College campus. Rooms with double occupancy and meals are included in the institute cost, but an additional $75.00 will be charged to those who desire a private room. The total cost for the institute, including room and board, is $909 without graduate credit, and $1359 with 3 graduate credits. Sandi MacLeod, the Instructor of Record, will provide additional information if needed.
NOTE: payment is made directly to Vermont MIDI Project NOT Champlain College. We have an education contract for the course and a facilities use contract so must pay them in one check for all our participants. If this is a confusion for your employer, please contact Sandi.

Sandi MacLeod Ed.D. has served as Vermont MIDI Project coordinator since 1996 and was a founding member of the project. This nationally acclaimed project includes over 5,000 students each year in about 40 Vermont schools as well as pilot project schools in New York, Virginia and Indiana. Student composers connect with professional composers for online mentoring. Performances featuring original student work from grades 3-12 are featured in live performances every fall and spring. VMP develops resources for music and composition in multimedia formats.
Sandi has conducted numerous workshops and courses about various aspects of music composition and areas of multimedia. She has shared the work of the Vermont MIDI Project at over 70 technology or music conferences in locations across the country since 1998. As a workshop facilitator, Sandi supports in-service and pre-service arts educators and classroom teachers to integrate the arts and technology in their teaching.
